Trent University rowing goes Movie industry with release of The Novice

Peterborough locations seen passim thriller that opens Friday at Galaxy Cinemas.

Peterborough locations and people are faced conspicuously in an award-winning movie that opens Friday at Galaxy Cinemas.

"The Novice," winner of Best U.S. Narrative Feature Film award at its June 13 debut at the Tribeca Flic Fete in New York City, was filmed in Peterborough over two months in the fall of 2019.

Three Peterborough Row Club and Trent University rowing coaches — James Dyer, Richard Thomas Reid and Dan Steer — were part with of the film's technical crew and a number of local and university rowers were extras in the plastic film.

Trent River rower Sage-green Irvine was cast in a tongued character and is featured prominently in the movie and attained a moving picture credit.

"It's brilliant ... a great movie," said Dyer, who was invited to an exclusive screening of the move in Toronto on Tuesday with a number of the rowers WHO appeared equally extras.

The film, which has a restricted rating, is a dark psychological thriller which chronicles a college freshman's obsessive pursual of excellence, in the schoolroom and her pursuit of a smirch happening the rowing team, while also wrestling with her sexed identity leads to a mental crisis.

The film, which is in select theatres and will also be available on demand and digital platforms, also has conventional spout reviews, with uncomparable vocation IT a "incubus spin on a traditional sports movie."

"The Novice" has also been nominated for five Independent Spirit Awards including topper feature, Lauren Hadaway for champion director, Isabelle Fuhrman for go-to-meeting female lead, Amy Forsyth for best supporting female and best editing.

Trent University and the Otonabee River are featured prominently with The Red Detent Tap house, a Hunter Street West place where a house party was recorded and a former storage warehouse in Omemee are separate locations utilized for film scenes.

Dyer, Reid and Bullock worked daily with the picture crew, oblation technical advice and expertise more or less row while as wel adapting rowing equipment to accommodate cameras, energetic the boats carrying camera crews and helping transport equipment arrange indoor rowing machines at the Omemee location.

"When you're in the trenches during filming," Dyer said, "you Don't really get an appreciation for what the scenes will finish looking like happening the big screen. Watching it complete semen together connected the screen was a thrilling experience.

"It is like a proper instinct-on Film industry movie. I think up we knew it was going to be like that but to see it in person is something very different, to see what we did," he said.

When asked if localised viewers will tell apart Peterborough locations in the picture show, Dyer aforementioned, "Oh yeah. All of Trent University. The Red Dog. Anyone WHO has spent time happening the body of water will distinguish a bunch of scenes on the Otonabee. There is a house party that happens which is a great deal your prototypical Saint George Street house," he said.

"They were motion-picture photography in classrooms where I had classes when I was a pupil. We all went to the Red-faced Firedog. It's cool to be in a theatre and get word places you frequented and everyone else is beholding them for the first time."

Dyer said IT was a lot of hard work for everyone interested including the educatee rowers put-upon as extras.

"The filming years had day and Night scenes so the filming days were often 18 and 20 hours long. These athletes, who were also students, who were besides extras, were doing all of those things at the one time. IT was a commendable effort on their part. I think they should see the movie and feel in truth good about it," said Dyer.

Peterborough Row Club President Brian Love said it was an exciting metre when the picture crew was on place and he hopes anyone involved volition discove it.

"I am told it's a well-behaved film. I wasn't competent to endure to the premiere unfortunately only I am anxious to be able to see it," Love said.
